Evacuation Questions

There was another interesting point brought up during the webinar on which I had the honor
of being a guest. The caller made a point about trading some metal, meaning gold or silver
coin, for some gas should you run low while in route to your safe area during an evacuation.
I don't think you'll get much gas for your gold coin in such a circumstance. My reply was to
offer something like an NBC filter from a NATO gas mask with an explanation of how to
draw air through the filter into a shelter to provide clean air for the person's family. Of
course, I went on in my own way of how this would be more valuable to the owner of the gas
without explaining very well the why of the matter. It's also important to note that you do
not have to trade a filter. The filter was merely an example. You should, however, be
prepared to trade a life saving item. This could be filters, ammo, food, water filter or
sleeping bags. I'm sure everyone can think of such an item that seems inexpensive now, but
will trade at a premium during a very bad disaster situation.

Such preparedness items will outperform gold and will trade when cities are burning. During
such a widespread catastrophe the majority of people will be in panic mode. They won't be
thinking about how gold will preserve wealth in the long term and give them purchasing
power in trade when an economic system is rebuilt. They will be thinking, " Holy $#!%! I'm
Gonna Die!! And if I die, My family's gonna die!" What will get you what you need to get to
your retreat is an item that the guy with the gas needs to save his life. You can't run your
engine on beef stroganov and he can't feed his family gas. If you're a survivalist and been
listening in on the webinars, then you already know that your main stock should be located
at your pre-stocked survival/vacation retreat. This retreat should be well off the beaten path
and supplied with storeage food, water sources and filters as well as all manner of survival
items you may need to last your family the rest of their lives. The items you are carrying in
your vehicle are to get you to your retreat in the short term and are expendible. Being
exendable, you may trade them for what is necessary to get you to your retreat and bulk of
your supplies.

Trading a spare NBC filter for half a tank of gas will serve the same purpose as using that
filter to protect yourself in a situation where you must evacuate from a contaminated area. In
both situations that filter might save your life. A better scenario would be to keep the tanks
in your evacuation vehicle topped off and extra fuel cans stored in the bed, back end or
trunk. You must know all of the routes and backroads to your retreat and you must know
how much fuel the longest way will require. Keep that fuel in your tanks and spare cans.

Speaking of keeping fuel in your tanks, a future issue of Survivalist Magazine will be about
alternative energy sources. I am writing an article on this subject now. If you are interested
